thanks to my new found love interest, toronto’s kenton magazine, i have discovered the most beautiful runway video from the one and only alexander mcqueen fall 12 show. so beautiful, in fact, that i had to share it with all of you immediately before you proceed with anythign else in your day. and i mean anything else because seriously, this is incredible stuff.
mcqueen is probably on every girl’s list of top fashion houses. everyone shed a few tears when lee mcqueen himself passed away in 2010, leaving behind some pretty fabulous shoes to fill and of course, everyone was blown away when his successor, macclesfield-born sarah burton took over the reigns and pumped out the past handful of show-stopping, jaw-dropping collections. it has been a whirlwind of a run for burton since her inception as creative director and head designer of the alexander mcqueen house – not only have her runway shows been out of this world, she was, of course, famed the world-over when she designed catherine duchess of cambridge’s gorgeous cinderella wedding dress. hand-stitched by blind nuns (just kidding, that’s from friends).
mcqueen is responsible for the craze in the skull motif (especially this year), as well as the fusion between fuckin’ badass and incredibly elegant. an integral part of the mcqueen world is theatricality, both in presence and in the clothes themselves. silhouettes move down the runway as if taking on a life of their own, embellishments teeter on the edge of costume and accessories give new meaning to the word dazzle. it is this theatricality, this costume, that makes a mcqueen runway show such a sight to see – not only do both mcqueen himself and sarah burton epitomize the concept of “the fantastic”, but the clothes are so special that the wearer becomes a different person entirely. this isn’t to call a mcqueen creation a mask or armour, only to say that a mcqueen creation somehow gives off this to-be-looked-at-ness that cannot be found anywhere else.
maybe all of the above is incredibly bizarre sounding, and totally over the top. but hey, that’s mcqueen for you.
the video is by director/producer trevor undi, under the creative direction of miss burton. the footage is taken from backstage and onstage at the mcqueen aw12 runway show – just watch!!
p.s: anyone know the name of the typewriter-y track from atonement??
